🍑Homemade Chili Garlic Oil
Homemade Garlic Chili Oil | Plant-Based Recipe
This Homemade Garlic Chili Oil combines sliced garlic, crushed red pepper flakes and sesame seeds in hot oil for an easy condiment with plenty of heat and garlic flavor. Keep a jar in the refrigerator and spoon it over noodles, rice, dumplings, vegetables, tofu or anything that needs a little extra kick.
Makes: about 1 cup | Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 8 minutes
Ingredients
¾ cup (180 ml.) avocado oil
6 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
3 tbsp. (18 g.) crushed red pepper flakes
1 tbsp. (9 g.) sesame seeds
1 tsp. smoked paprika
½ tsp. fine sea salt
½ tsp. coconut sugar
¼ tsp. ground black pepper
Directions
Add the avocado oil and sliced garlic to a small saucepan.
Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and cook for 4 to 6 minutes, stirring often, until the garlic turns lightly golden. Keep the heat moderate so the garlic does not burn.
While the garlic cooks, add the crushed red pepper flakes, sesame seeds, smoked paprika, salt, coconut sugar and black pepper to a heatproof bowl or jar.
Remove the saucepan from the heat as soon as the garlic is golden.
Carefully pour the hot oil and garlic over the chili mixture. Stir gently to combine.
Let the chili oil cool completely before transferring it to a clean glass jar.
Refrigerate until ready to use. Stir before spooning it over your favorite dishes.
Make It Yours
For less heat, reduce the crushed red pepper flakes to 2 tbsp. (12 g.).
For more heat, add ¼ to ½ tsp. cayenne pepper.
Add ½ tsp. ground ginger or 1 tsp. finely grated fresh ginger for another layer of flavor.
Add 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil after the mixture cools slightly for a stronger sesame flavor.
Replace some of the sesame seeds with chopped peanuts or cashews for extra texture.
Add a small pinch of Chinese five-spice powder for a different variation.
Kitchen Notes
Watch the garlic closely. Once it begins to turn golden, it can brown very quickly.
Pouring the hot oil over the chili flakes and spices helps release their flavor without scorching them.
Keep the oil refrigerated in a clean, tightly covered jar.
For food safety, use a clean spoon each time and discard the oil if you notice any unusual odor, bubbling or mold.
Pairs Well With
Spoon this garlic chili oil over rice bowls, noodle dishes, dumplings, stir-fries, roasted vegetables, tofu, soups or avocado toast. It also works well stirred into dipping sauces or mixed with soy sauce and rice vinegar for a quick noodle dressing.
